The quote for a standing seam roof usually lands at about two and a half times the price of architectural shingles. That number makes most people close the brochure. It should not, at least not straight away.
How long are you staying?
A good architectural shingle roof lasts 30 years in Central Ohio. Standing seam lasts 50 to 70. If this is your forever home, you will likely buy shingles twice. Once you add the second tear off and inflation, metal often comes out ahead.
Energy and insurance
A light colored metal roof reflects more heat, and several Ohio insurers discount metal and Class 4 roofs. Neither is huge on its own, but over decades they add up.
When shingles win
If you plan to sell within ten years, a new shingle roof returns more of its cost at sale than metal does. And on a complicated roof with lots of valleys and dormers, metal labor climbs fast.
Our estimator tool on the home page gives you both numbers side by side. For an exact comparison, we will price both options on the same written estimate.
